Leflunomide Tablets IP 20 mg is a prescription medication that is primarily used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. This drug is classified as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) that helps reduce joint damage and improve physical function over time. Leflunomide is very helpful in treating autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks its own tissues.
Leflunomide works by inhibiting an enzyme known as dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, which is essential in the use of pyrimidines needed in DNA replication in activated lymphocytes. Inhibiting this enzyme decreases immune cell activation mediated by inflammation and joint destruction, thus controlling autoimmune responses.
The duration for seeing the effects of leflunomide can take 4 to 6 weeks or longer. However, it is imperative to remain compliant with your doctor’s recommendation to take it regularly as scheduled!
Regular Monitoring: Monitoring of liver function, blood pressure and white blood cell count should be performed regularly via blood tests.
Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol consumption increases the risk of liver damage.
Pregnancy Warning: Do not take Leflunomide during pregnancy or during the process of conception. Leflunomide carries the risk of major birth defects. Women of childbearing age must be on effective contraception.
Drug Elimination Protocol: If and when a pregnancy is contemplated, or serious side effects occur, a cholestyramine washout may be prescribed to rapidly remove Leflunomide.
Drug Interactions: Make sure to tell the doctor about any supplements or other medications being taken as well, especially methotrexate, NSAIDs, and live vaccines.
