Linezolid tablets IP 600 mg are powerful antibiotics meant for use in severe bacterial infections such as infections with gram-positive bacteria resistant to other drugs. These belong to the oxazolidinone class and are highly effective against pneumonia, skin, and soft tissue infections, including drug-resistant strains like MRSA strains and VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci).
Linezolid tablet contains 600 mg of this semi-synthetic antibacterial agent with bacteriostatic (growth inhibiting) and bactericidal (bacteria killing) activities depending upon the organism and the source of the infection. Taken under medical supervision, the drug for oral use usually is given one tablet every 12 hours.
Mechanism of Action
Linezolid acts on bacterial protein synthesis. It stops the formation of the 70S initiation complex by attaching to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. Being a new mechanism of action, it prevents bacteria from further growth and reproduction and finally kills the infection. This unique mechanism makes Linezolid work in cases where other antibiotics have failed.
